Ron Arad’s Functional Sculptures

Ron Arad nos muestra como la IMAGINACIÓN va más allá del pensamiento. Sus diseños son inspiradores y cargados de creatividad. Y es por esto que sus productos son llamados “esculturas funcionales”, en los cuales se muestra su curiosidad por la combinación de materiales, formas alocadas y tecnología en cuanto a procesos de manufactura.

Ron Arad shows us how the word IMAGINATION goes beyond the thought. His designs are inspiring and full of creativity. That’s why his products are called “Functional sculptures”, in which his curiosity is shown by the combination of materials, crazy shapes and technologic manufacturing processes.

Nació en Tel Aviv (Israel) en 1951. Estudió en la Academia de arte y diseño Bezalel de Jerusalén y años más tarde se trasladó a Londres, donde se estableció profesionalmente. Siempre fue reconocido por combinar la arquitectura y el diseño, y al terminar sus estudios en el Architectural Association of London, creó en 1981 su estudio de diseño “One Off”, en el que trabaja actualmente.

He was born in Tel Aviv (Israel) in 1951. He studied at the Art & Design Academy of Bezalel in Jerusalem and years later moved into London, where he established professionally. He was always recognized for combining design and architecture, and at the end of his studies at the Architectural Association of London, he created his design studio “One Off”, where we currently works.

Ron Arad siempre imprime versatilidad a sus piezas, ya sea mobiliario, lámparas, joyería, espacios o piezas funcionales. Lo más característico de sus diseños son las formas voluminosas y esculturales. Esta estética particular ha hecho que se diferencie de otros diseñadores, al ser pionero en innovación en formas y materiales, siendo capaz de no cerrarse en ninguna categoría, haciendo de su diseño algo libre. 

 

Ron Arad puts always a sense of versatility in his pieces, whether it is furniture, lights, jewelry, interior design or functional products. The most representative of his designs are the voluminous and sculptural shapes. This particular aesthetics make him stand over other designers, being a pioneer on innovation when it comes on shapes and materials, and not being settled in any specific category.

Otro punto característico en el diseño de Ron Arad es su trabajo con el metal, donde ha implementado con el tiempo diferentes técnicas de soldadura, con las que resalta el valor estético de este material en sus creaciones. Ejemplo de ello, son las sillas Big Easy y Well Tempered para las empresas Moroso y Vitra respectivamente. La primera hecha con láminas dobladas y soldadura de acero, donde lo interesante está en la técnica de soldadura pues es prácticamente invisible sobre el metal pulido, y la segunda hecha con láminas dobladas y unidas con pernos.

Another symbolic thing in Ron Arad’s design is his work with metal, where he has introduced different techniques of welding, which gives a higher aesthetic value to his creations. Big Easy and Well temered chairs for Moroso and Vitra respectively, are an example of this. The first one is done with bent metal sheets and steel welding, and the second one done with bent metal sheets and bolts.

En su studio en Londres busca estar en constante evolución, y es por esto que ha trabajado con diversas empresas y marcas reconocidas en el mundo del diseño como Driade, Cassina, Alessi ,Magis, Materialise, Vitra… entre otras. Va de un material y proceso a otro: de sinterizado laser y estereolitografia a plástico extruido y prototipaje rápido.

Sus creaciones hacen parte de muestras de arte contemporáneo, exhibidas en museos y galerías como el MoMa en Nueva York, Victoria & Albert Museum en Londres, Pompidou en París o el Vitra Design museum en Alemania. Es por esto que es uno de los diseñadores más influyentes de nuestra época.

He tries to be in constant evolution in his design studio at London, and thats why he has worked with lots of important companies and brands such as Driade, Cassina, Alessi, Magis, Materialise and Vitra for example.

His creations have become a part of contemporary art exhibitions at museums and galleries. MoMa of New York, Victoria and Albert museum of London, Pompidou center in Paris or the Vitra design museum in Germany have shown his designs. That’s why he’s one of the most influential designers of our time.

Ron Arad concibe el diseño como un “arte para experimentar”, y nos parece interesante que siga proponiendo productos, no solo a través de formas y colores, sino con un gran contenido tecnológico. Actualmente la innovación no se basa en la parte estética, sino en las diversas maneras de llegar a un resultado final, sea a través de materiales o procesos.

Ron Arad conceives design as “the art of experiment”, and it’s interesting for us that he keeps making products, not just from an aesthetic view, but with a huge technological content. Nowdays innovation is not based only in the aesthetics, but in different ways to get to a final result, whether through materials or processes.
